If you are out & about in Barcelona as a vegan, you have good chances finding something vegan to eat in many places.

Restaurants which have specialized on vegetarians and vegans are many to find in Barcelona, if you know where to look out for.

Here are the most important and best places for vegans to eat and drink plantbased, to get happy, and stay healthy.

Enjoy the raid...ehm... ride!

How vegan is Barcelona?

The "Vegan raid over..." series is a guide on vegan food and drinks in a couple of major cities in Europe I am travelling to. The nature of this article is dynamic. That means, it will be updated and expanded as soon as I travel there and find some new great restaurant, etc. that I find worth introducing. From time to time, I will have some help of my vegan friends to do this delicious job. Be curious of what's coming up to you! You may find some sneak preview at the end of each article, which restaurants and places may be tested next.

In many videos and articles I have researched, Barcelona is praised as one of the most vegan friendly cities in Europe. Vegans may find something vegan in almost every bigger restaurant. The obvious trend is, that modern style restaurants - especially restaurant chains - are expanding their vegetarian and vegan offers for their guests on a wider scale. There mixed vegetarian - vegan restaurants on the market and even some purely vegan restaurants, which already gained high popularity not only among vegans. That mega trend rolls on and on!

Food Market Sant Josep: La Boqueria

The famous food market La Boqueria is located on the lower end of Las Ramblas - the famous promenade or more infamous tourist trap starting in the harbour area leading to Placa de Catalunya.

On this food market you will find an abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, shellfish and ready-to-eat snacks and drinks on the highest quality level. The colourful display of all the produce will stun you at first sight.

La Boqueria has so much to offer

There are lots of vegan snacks to buy. The potato & veggie chips really look tempting. On a hot summer day, ice-cold smoothies stand ready to grab for you. Or just buy some fresh fruits. Vegan epanadas are offered not just at La Boqueria. You will find epanadas in many food stalls. There's even a food chain specialized on epanadas with many shops in Barcelona.

Please beware of pickpockets, because La Boqueria is always crowded. Take your time in exploring that great food market. It's really worthwhile.

La Boqueria Sant Josep is heavily frequented by tourists and locals. This is one of Barcelona's main attractions to visit.

The first beginnings of this food market in Barcelona go back to 1217 where the first food stalls where established on Las Ramblas. Over the years this food market grew bigger and bigger. Between 1998 and 2001. From 2002 cooking classes are held upstairs of the building of the food market. The food stalls were remodeled to the concept how we know it today. In 2015 the area around the food market was modernized, too. This is the actual state of La Boqueria Stant Josep as we know it today.

Such a food market lays a great foundation, if you love to cook yourself, and have the opportunity to do so in Barcelona in your Air BNB location or with some friends at home. You can pick the best vegan ingredients and turn them into a delicious vegan feast.

Demasié - The almost vegan coffee shop

Cookies and cinnamon rolls are the most important yummy temptations of this pastry shop. Not all of them are vegan, but there are many vegan versions to get there. They are definately all worth the sweet sin.

Demasié's cinnamon rolls are legendary. The green matcha cookies are not from this world. You must try them before you die!

I also bought a Demasié shopping bag for me, I now use on very regular basis.

The cinnamon rolls of all kinds are the main eye catcher in the shop window of demasié.

Eat real: Honest Greens

Honest Greens is a raw - gluten free - keto - vegetarian - vegan restaurant chain with a sustainable and healthy concept. "Eat like your ancesors" is their motto. No refined sugars, no chemical food ingredients, no mass produced farm animals. Organically grown produce from sustainable suppliers is the key to quality and success of Honest Greens.

Starting the food revolution

In 2017 Christopher, Rasmus and Benjamin founded Honest Greens in Madrid with the aim to start a feed revolution in the gastronomy. They wanted to cater really healthy food from the 3 healthiest diets known to their guests. Unprocessed, organically grown foods from sustainable farms.

The heart of every restaurant is the bar and the show kitchen. Every guest can watch how the food is prepared and served. Every restaurant has a casual and relaxing atmosphere with really friendly and competent staff. I think, this restaurant chain has a good potential to grow...not only in Spain.

In my opinion, Honest Greens is more like a bridge for everyone to explore healthier food and to try out a new diet. Not only vegans and vegetarians sit here, but every diet preference from young to old do meet here. Be curious & try it out!

Sustainability is not just a word with Honest Greens. It's actually practised here! This is the first place, I've seen biodegradable coffee capsules in my life. While other hotel and restaurant chains are still forced to buy invironmental hazardous items, Honest Green as a newly started and small restaurant chain can select and change the most sustainable  suppliers much quicker than huge companies.

My vegan fellows: Now it's your turn!

Which vegan restaurants in Barcelona did you fell in love with? Which vegan restaurant, I not have tested yet, shall belong to my bucket list?

Write it in the comments. Thanks.
