Vegan Raid over Berlin 2022

Berlin is the capital of Germany and the biggest city of Germany, too. Berlin has got the widest and best offer of vegan food in supermarkets, bars, restaurants, cafés and more. Therefore, Berlin is the vegan capital of Germany.

In my first Vegan Raid, I introduce some vegan spots and specials that are typical for this particular city.

Berlin food culture combines traditional German cuisine from the areas around Berlin as well as many international cuisines - foremost the Turkish, Italian, Russian, and also many Asian cuisines, which were brought in from migrants coming to Berlin all over the past years.

Vegan Berlin

Berlin is the vegan capital of Germany

German vegans know, when it comes to vegan offers, Berlin lead the way in German. Why is that? In comparison to other German cities, Berlin is way ahead when it comes to satisfy vegan needs. Berlin has the most colourful and widest selection of international inhabitants and visitors in Germany. On one hand, Berlin is like a huge train station, where people come and go every year in and out. On the other hand, Berlin has a lot of people, who are hardcore Berliners born here and not wanting to leave, because they do not want to live anywhere else on the planet.

Berlin is also a very innovative city with many start-ups that can stand up with international competition easily.

Here I will introduce some typical Berlin vegan institutions and food offers, which may be considered best of their trade.

Veganz

Veganz is a great idea straight from Berlin: creating a purely vegan supermarket. This idea was loved and hated alike. It was not easy though. Veganz actually managed to open 3 vegan supermarkets in Berlin. They made it with some stores outside of Germany. In my opinion, the most intelligent idea was, to offer their vegan brand products exclusively to established supermarkets like REWE to widen their product range. This is cheaper than to open own supermarkets themselves.

The idea to open a purely vegan supermarket was revolutionary back some years ago. With some obstacles they made it on a smaller scale as planed. On the other side, there were always hardcore vegans speaking up against that project, because they don't wanted to see the vegan idea commercialized in that heavy way.

Today, Veganz offers a wide range of vegan quality produce under their label, which is well established. Well done!

I visited the smaller outlet in Prenzlauer Berg. By the way: Berlin has many organic supermarkets especially in this area.

Many substitutes for meat are here

A wide selection of foods in the cold storage

Even vegan dog and cat food is available.

Various dry foods of all kinds

And of course: unpacked fresh fruits and veggies.

An unpacked cerials and nuts station is a must.

When a Currywurst went vegan

Currywurst - a curried sausage - is one of the most famous fast food dishes Berlin has to offer. It is served in a ketchup-like, spicy sauce with curry powder on top. A portion of chips aka French fries normally comes with it.

Of course, it was just a matter of time, until a vegan Currywurst - literally curried sausage - would see the light.

Curry 36 on Mehringdamm in Kreuzberg is known as one of the best, as if not THE best, Currywurst stalls in Berlin. The have a vegan Currywurst on their menu, too. Curry 36 has opened stalls all over Berlin now.

Vöner & vegetable döner

Döner Kebap was founded in Berlin by a Turkishman. The rest is history. Nowadays you can find döner kebap everywhere in Germany, Turkey and many countries all over the world alike. Döner Kebap is one of the TOP 5 favourite German fast foods. So bringing a vegan döner kebap or a vegetable kebap here is a must!

Also located on Mehringdamm you will find Mustafa 's Gemüsekebap right next to Curry 36. Mustafa is the undefeated star of vegan kebap in Berlin. The crowd queues up for many meters each night waiting patiently to be served. The know it's worthwhile!

Asian cuisine is big in Berlin

The Good Morning Vietnam is an all-vegan restaurant in the very popular Bergmannkiez in Kreuzburg.

After the fall of the Iron Curtain, Vietnamese people were the first Asians around in Berlin. Unfortunately, they were more notorious for selling cigarettes in the black market, than anything else back in the days. Today, there are many Vietnamese restaurants in Berlin. This one has an especially calm and friendly atmosphere in a backyard of a busy street. The food and their service is just great!
