Testing WineHub Part 1

Winehub is a German website offering great value for money wines with affordable prices. Winehub has a good selection of organic and vegan wines to offer. I will review 3 vegan wines of Winehub...so let's go for round one: A Merlot from South Africa, that will knock you off your feet.

Stellar Organics Merlot

After their Chenin Blanc became a hit, this Merlot is the second successful attempt to produce a No-sulphur-added-wine of the Stellar Organics range.

With 14% vol. and 2 g / litre sugar this is a bold, deep purple and dry red wine, followed by 5,5 g / litre acid and many wood flavours from its maturing in barrels.

Those wooden and smoky flavours, mainly cedar and cigar box, are balanced mainly red fruit flavours like raspberry, figs, blueberry, black cherry and blackberry flavours mixed with some coffee, leather and vanilla.

Overall this is a quite intense package. Already drinkable for such a young wine.

Because of the bold tannins and the high alcohol I 'd give this wine still a couple of years to get more harmonic and mature, although it is not made for aging, but consumption in the near future. In spite of its young age, this wine shows already some clear hints of a matured wine.

The Stallar Organics project

About 300 km north of Kap Town, the Stellar Organics winery is located in Trawal and a cellar in Vredendal. This is not an ordinary winery. This is a special agricultural and social project, bringing the winery, farmers and workers together working for this great project. The aims of this project are:

  • establishing more organic farming in South Africa
  • providing workers with social facilities, healthcare and fair & modern working standards
  • empowering local farmers to improve their business
  • enhancing the reputation of South African products worldwide

The owner of Stellar Organics, Mr Willem Rossouw, began in the nineties to switch from conventional vinegrowing to organic farming. In 2003 he obtained a Fairtrade certificate for his efforts. In 2011 he changes to the Swiss 'Fair for Life'-certificate, which he considers more up-to-date for the philosophy of his winery.

I see a very bright future for this winery with many good & interesting wines still to come. This vegan merlot already became a favourite of mine.

Pairing food with this Merlot

This organic Merlot may match well with strong cheeses and gratinees. I found a great match of that kind: A baked camembert, which recipe is here on this blog, too. This posh camembert is a great combination of spicy, sweet and sour flavours to stand up and harmonize with this Merlot. Enjoy!

If you like to have this great vegan & organic Merlot from South Africa, just drop in at the Winehub and order this wine!

The recipe for the posh camembert is already here on this blog. Happy shopping.
